God is talking to you — do you hear Him?
God is a talker. He loves to have conversation with His children. He wants to hear what is on your heart, just as He wants to share His heart with you.
The story of Jeremiah has always been an encouragement for me. I remember reading about The Lord calling to Jeremiah. Then, they discussed what the Lord was saying. Here is part of that conversation between Jeremiah and the Lord.
Now the word of the Lord came to me, saying,
“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you [and
approved of you as My chosen instrument], and before you
were born I consecrated you [to Myself as My own];
I have appointed you as a prophet to the nations.”
Then I (Jeremiah) said, “Ah, Lord God!
Behold, I do not know how to speak,
For I am [only] a young man.”
But the Lord said to me,
“Do not say, ‘I am [only] a young man,’
Because everywhere I send you, you shall go,
And whatever I command you, you shall speak.
“Do not be afraid of them [or their hostile faces],
For I am with you [always] to protect you and deliver you,”
says the Lord.
Then the Lord stretched out His hand and touched my mouth, and the Lord said to me,
“Behold (hear Me), I have put My words in your mouth.
— Jeremiah 1:4-9, Amplified Bible
Jeremiah talked with God, he asked God questions and listened as God replied – it was a dialogue not a monologue.
This is God’s dream for you. He wants you to have dialogue or conversation with Him. You can ask the Lord a question, share about your day or ask Him what He is thinking about.
But, first we must accept that God chooses to communicate in different ways. When I say hearing God, I am not limiting it to an audible sound. I am also taking into account the small inner voice that gently guides you. And the times when you are reading and the words seem to jump off the page; these are ways God communicates with you.
You can sense God’s communication through your thoughts, images in your mind, numbers, colors, fragrances, experiencing a cool breeze where there is none or warmth that comes over you for no explainable reason. Other times you feel a nudge to do something that is out of your wheelhouse.
Here is a short excerpt from my book, God’s Dream for Your Life, that will give you a little insight about that nudge of God.
I often feel the urge to call a specific person, but my first reaction
is WHY? I have no understanding as to why I would call, but I
am nudged to do it. In my obedience, to my amazement, God
has prepared the opportunity for me to bring encouragement
to them or for them to have encouragement for me; most of the
time, it is mutually beneficial. (page 149)
