Since October 2018, the Lord has been speaking to me about the coming Financial Shift, meaning an increase of finances. We have experienced it in our church, and I have experienced it personally.
What is interesting about this increase is it has not manifested in a single way, but through a variety of different ways.
Let me share one example of a creative way God showed us to bring in income.
We had sold our house and downsized to a smaller one. We realized in this move, much of our furniture would not fit. God reminded me of a friend who does estate sales and I contacted her. We were able to sell all of our furniture and bring in additional income for our move.
I have also realized that God wants us to be healed from our unhealthy relationship with finances in order for us to be good stewards of this influx of funds. A few weeks ago, I taught about Financial Healing. You can listen to the class on the church website by clicking the link: Financial Class.
In this blog, I am sharing a few of the highlights from the class. My goal is to help you get free of any hidden lies about your ability to handle money or being wealthy.
Two of my favorite resources about this, besides the Bible, are Financial Sozo by Stephen DeSilva and The Blessed Life by Robert Morris. I would encourage you to check out each of these resources, as well as, Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace.
Let’s dig in!
In Deuteronomy 8:18, “And you shall remember the Lord your God, for it is He who gives you power to get wealth, that He may establish His covenant which He swore to your fathers, as it is this day.” (NKJV) This passage is speaking to physical, material wealth.
God has empowered us to produce wealth. This empowerment is so we are able to accomplish His Kingdom plans within the monetary system we live in. Our ability to manage the Kingdom work within this system largely depends on what we believe about money.
Remember, money is just one of the vehicles we use to move the Kingdom forward.
Unhealthy beliefs are in essence LIES that we believe about money. These lies can create a block for us when it comes to receiving money and distributing money.
Here are some LIES that you may be believing:
- I will never be good with money
- My family never had money, so I will never have money
- I cannot seem to hold on to the money I have
- I am the only one who can take care of myself
- I have plenty of money, but it isn’t enough
- I cannot give any money away
- I envy anyone that has more money than me
When I was growing up, there were times we would not have enough money to pay the electric or water bill. I would come home and the electric would be turned off or there was no water or both.
One of the lies I believed was I am the only one who can take care of me. Even after I was married, there was that little lie in me that kept saying, I can never quit my job, I have to have my own money coming in.
I had an unhealthy obsession with money — not that I had to have lots of it — but I had to have my own just in case.
God took me through the process of getting rid of the lies and receiving His truth. I will share the steps at the end. Before I do, I want to lay a biblical foundation regarding money.
Let’s look at two biblical accounts dealing with our feelings about money.
Our first account comes from Luke 16:13 NKJV:
“No servant can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon.”
Mammon means treasure and riches.
In this verse, Jesus is not saying we cannot have money. What Jesus is saying is He does not want us to be slaves to money!
We see an example of what Jesus meant in Matthew 19:16-22. There is a story of a rich, young man’s encounter with Jesus.
The young man wanted the key to eternal life, and Jesus explains that he is to follow the commandments. The man replies that he has done this since his youth, so what is next.
Jesus said to him, “If you want to be perfect, go, sell what you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me.” But when the young man heard that saying, he went away sorrowful, for he had great possessions (Matthew 19:21-22 NKJV).
Jesus was testing his heart to see where the young man’s treasure lies. The young man was a slave to his possessions.
Our second account comes from Matthew 25:14-29.
It is the story of being a good steward of what is given to us. There are three servants who were given money to invest. The first invested his five talents and doubled them to ten. The second invested his two and doubled his to four. The last one was overcome by fear and hid the talent in the ground.
The last servant had an unhealthy relationship with money. Instead of seeing ways to increase, he only saw the possibility of loss. He had a poverty mindset, meaning in his heart was the fear of multiplying what was given to him. So he was unable to increase.
How do we develop a healthy relationship with money?
One of the steps is to see if there is any lie you are believing that creates an unhealthy view of money. These are very basic and simple steps, but it can help you get started. I listed other resources for a more in-depth understanding of God and His view for you in the financial arena.
Financial Healing:
1. Inquire: Ask Jesus, “Is there a lie I am believing about money?” Write down what you sense God saying.
2. Renounce the lie by saying: “Jesus, I renounce the lie that (add what He has told you).”
3. Ask: “Jesus would you tell me what is the truth?
This is where you are exchanging the lie you just renounced with the truth.
4. Activate the truth Jesus has given you.
One way would be to declare it out loud each day.
You can continue the process until you sense you have covered all the lies.
