Change Your Words – Change Your Life

When I was growing up we use to say to someone who was calling us names, “Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never harm me.”

What a lie!

Words are the most powerful weapon we possess. There is life and death in the power of the tongue! (See Proverbs 18:21) The words we speak become our mindset.

I have touched on the power of words several times in the Unleashing the Champion Within episodes. However, in this episode I am addressing how our words create mindsets, and our mindsets become reality in our life.

Let’s start with the basics. What is the meaning of mindset?

Mindset is a particular way of thinking: a person’s attitude or set of opinions about something.1

Our mindset forms what we believe and what we believe creates the framework we build our life around — whether positive or negative, true or false. Think about the false statement I opened with and the mindset it produces.  It says when people say mean and hurtful things to us, it is harmless. When in reality, hurtful words can cause emotional damage to our souls. And as we know our physical health is dependent on the health of our soul.

“Beloved friend, I pray that you are prospering in every way and that you continually enjoy good health, just as your soul is prospering.” (3 John 1:2 AMP)

On the flip side, words conveying positive messages create a mindset producing good outcomes and successes. Healthy thoughts produce healthy mindsets and healthy soul contributing to a healthy body.

We love rags to riches stories because it demonstrates that we have the ability to change our circumstances, regardless of our past, by changing our mindsets —!

The story of John Paul Dejoria, who was the creator of John Paul Mitchell Hair Product Systems is a great testimony of a changed mindset.

“When you start with next to nothing,
all you’ve got is a lot of thought,
a lot of innovation, figuring new ways to do things
without using a lot of money.”2
John Paul DeJoria

John Paul sold Christmas cards and newspapers to help support his family before he turned 10. He ended up in a foster home, was a member of an L.A. gang, and later joined the military. Eventually, he secured a $700 loan to develop John Paul Mitchell Systems. While living in his car, he sold the product door-to-door. Now JPM is worth over $900 million dollars!3

John Paul Dejoria’s success reflects his resilience to rise above the circumstances of his formative years to champion a path of success. He did this by developing a mindset that believed his past would not limit his future. The possibility of success existed in his mind first.

How do we change our mindset?

1) Change Our Verbiage

We can change our mindset by changing what we speak out loud. This may seem to be too simple, but let me give you an example how reversing the words changes your mindset.

Using a familiar statement
I don’t have enough time in the day –

changing it to —
I have more than enough time to accomplish what I need to do —

changes your mindset, which changes your ability to solve the issue.

When you believe you can get things done, your mind begins to create the action to do it.

2) Gaining Knowledge from our Missteps

Some people call it failure, but I like the term missteps. When we think in terms of failure, we think lack of success and we become disheartened.

When you miss a step, you go review your process and learn from what you missed. In everything you do, you can identify what worked and what didn’t work. By doing this, your mindset changes from defeat to one of learning as you go, enabling you to finish.

3) Bouncing Back Quickly

Earlier, we heard a summary of John Paul Dejoria’s success. But what we didn’t hear was how many attempts were made before he hit success.

Dejoria shares, “Indeed, it’s all about persistence, he says. “Be just as enthusiastic on door 101 if 100 have been closed in your face. Eventually you’re going to do it.”4

His mindset was — “I am going to do it!”

What mindsets do your thoughts create?

Let me close with this quote written by James Allen in 1903 from his self-help book, As a Man Thinketh.

“He who cherishes a beautiful vision,
a lofty ideal in his heart, will one day realize it.”5

I would love to hear about your mindset.
