Start with Why: Find Your Passion with this Powerful Little Word

“If your why doesn’t make you cry, it’s not your why.” – Coach Hite

Did you know that by simply answering the question “What is my why?” you can find your passion and catapult yourself into a life of significance? You can!

What drives you to do the things you do? Your answer to this question is to start with why

Your answer can make the difference between finding and living your passion and experiencing an unfulfilled existence.

Many years ago, I worked for a company doing a job I loved. Even though I enjoyed going to work every day, I still felt unsatisfied. Something was missing.

Then, a friend invited me to a two-day Tony Robbin’s seminar. Yes, the one with the fire walk (and yes, I did it!).

When Tony invited individuals up onto the stage, they had an epiphany about their passion in a matter of minutes. Joy and excitement overwhelmed them, so much so that they cried.

They were crying because they found what they wanted to do AND why they wanted to do it.

In that moment, I too discovered the why that made me cry!

I knew what I wanted to do: help others find their passion so that they can live the life they dream about.

Discovering your why—the reason you do what you do—is one of most important keys to living a fulfilled life.

This is because your why is the driving force behind your life. It is how to find your passion, and it fuels you to live it.

Here are three important reasons to discover your why:

  1. Your Why keeps you moving forward.
  2. Your Why gives you courage to take risks.
  3. Your Why fuels the passion that burns inside of you.

Let’s take a minute and break each of these down.

1. Starting with why keeps you moving forward.

Your why is the power that keeps you motivated to take the next step in your plan of action.

Last week I spent time working on my goals for this year. I detailed my health goals, financial goals, growth goals, and spiritual goals.

Next, I identified the why behind each goal—why each goal was important to my life.

By asking “What is my why?”, I started to feel excitement well up inside of me. When I returned to work, I had a new surge of energy, clarity, and creativity to complete my plan of action.

2. Starting with why gives you the courage to take risks.

John Ortberg wrote a book called, If You Want to Walk on Water, You’ve

Got to Get Out of the Boat.

When you start with why, you have the courage to step out onto the water, even when you think you might sink!

This does not mean that fear and trepidation do not exist. It means your why is giving you the courage to risk stepping outside of them to find your passion.

I remember the first time I was invited to speak at a conference. This conference was a BIG deal to me! I was up most of the night before rehearsing what I was going to say.

Once I made it through the first few jittery minutes, I knew that the door of my dreams was opening, and that I was stepping into a new chapter.

And it all started with my why

3. Starting with why fuels the passion that burns inside of you.

Your why is like gasoline for a car—it fuels the engine. Knowing your why fuels your mind and emotions and unifies them so that your passion is headed in the right direction.

You are wired for significance, to add value to life. Starting with why helps you develop a vision for the future and fuels it for the long haul.

Understanding the why of your actions is the driving force in your life. It keeps you moving forward, it gives you courage to take risks, and it keeps the fire burning inside of you.

Sometimes identifying your why means coming together with others who are on the same journey to discover their passion and live their dreams. Just like joining forces with other at Tony Robbin’s seminar changed my life, we all can experience greater clarity and glean inspiration when we come together.
