Making Time for Your Dream

“Time is free, but it’s priceless.
You can’t own it, but you can use it.
You can’t keep it, but you can spend it.
Once you’ve lost it you can never get it back.”
~ Harvey McKay ~

Imagine the freedom you would have if you could add an extra two hours or even an hour or thirty minutes to your day. How would you spend your extra time? Would you write a book, play golf or spend time with your family? Each day you could CHOOSE how you wanted to use your time!

I discovered how to make time for my dreams by looking at how I scheduled my day. In doing this I realized the planning of my day was very inefficient. Once I began tracking my time each day, I immediately identified two time eaters.

My first time eater was the way I schedule my meetings, based on whatever time my clients needed. I changed my tactic by deciding to allocate one day a week for my meetings. This method really gives me more time, because I am no longer breaking up the flow of the day for meetings.

My second time eater was allowing the meetings to run over the scheduled time. By scheduling all my meetings the same day, it compels my meetings to begin and end on time.

As I coach others in discovering and living their dream, one of the first steps is to have the client track how they spend each minute of their day. They use my Time Management Log (TML) to track their time for 14 days.  It may sound tedious, but when we track our time it provides us with the opportunity to evaluate and choose how we want to spend our time. The download link is available at the end of the blog.

There are 4 Areas of the Time Management Log.

1) Tracking

The key is to write down everything you do from the time you wake in the morning until you go to bed. This includes everything from getting coffee, to making breakfast, walking the dog or watching TV. I would recommend you frame your day by using the time you wake up and go to bed.

2) Analyze Your Time

Take each activity from the two weeks and list them out. From there you can see how much time is spent in each area. There may be activities you do each day, like making coffee. And then there may be an activity that was just one-time, like giving someone a ride to the airport.

3) Identify “Time Eaters”

As you review your categories, look for activities that eat away at your day. Another time eater I found was my email. I was checking my email frequently throughout the day. Now, I only check it two to three times a day.

4) Rearranging Your Schedule

The hard work is over, now it is time for you to choose how to best schedule your time. In selecting what is best reveals those pockets of time that you can dedicate to the things you really want to do. This may take a little getting use to, but it will be so worth it.

Next week, we will work on planning each day for success by making the most of what we have planned! And as an added bonus, I will have my Live Your Dreams Schedule available for you. Make sure you download my Time Management Log and start the process of making time for your dreams!
