Season of Generosity

Over the last month I have traveled to Atlanta and Minneapolis. I have met with some amazing people who are running hard after what God has for them in this season. One thing I have noticed with all of my travels is an increase of outpouring of generosity.

It has been interesting watching this overflowing generosity. And what is so amazing, it is not just one person expressing generosity, but almost everyone I encounter.

Here are a few things that I personally experienced while I was traveling and it has continued since I have been home.

1) The different people I met with would pick up the cost of our meal — even though, I had planned to pick up the bill. People would go on coffee runs and bless me with coffee. I kept trying to pay for things, but they wouldn’t have it. I was so excited when one time I did get to pay for lunches!

2) People wanted to be my chauffeur, even though I had a car. It was such a wonderful surprise and demonstration of generosity.

These two examples may seem so simple, but the generosity was pouring out an overabundance. People could not resist being generous.

I believe generosity goes with the season we are in right now. There is an outpouring of the Presence of God in signs and wonders and this has stirred up a heart of generosity to go with it.

Have you recognized an increase in generosity? Take a minute to think about the generosity that you have given or received.

Often, we equate generosity with financial giving. We think we are not generous unless we bless someone with a financial gift, but —

Generosity is a condition of our heart, not our pocketbooks.

In Acts 5, Ananias and Sapphira joined the move of unity and generosity by selling their farm. But the condition of their heart was wrongly connected to the amount of money to give and they were exposed in a lie that was created to make them appear more generous than their hearts allowed.

Generosity is truly a condition of the heart. They were a part of a new expression of unity, which led to an abundant outpouring of generosity by all the believers. In wanting to look like the others they attempted to deceive God.

“Now the company of believers was of one heart and soul, and not one [of them] claimed that anything belonging to him was [exclusively] his own, but everything was common property and for the use of all. There was not a needy person among them, because those who were owners of land or houses were selling them, and bringing the proceeds of the sales and placing the money down at the apostles’ feet. Then it was distributed to each as anyone had need.” (Acts 4:32, 34-35 AMP)

“They conspired to secretly keep back for themselves a portion of the proceeds. So, when Ananias brought the money to the apostles, it was only a portion of the entire sale.” (Acts 5:2 TPT)

Ananias and Sapphira were under no obligation to give anything. The fact that they tried to deny the full amount they had received for the sale revealed the condition of their heart. And in the deceit —  it cost them their lives.

“Let each one give [thoughtfully and with purpose] just as he has decided in his heart, not grudgingly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver [and delights in the one whose heart is in his gift].” (2 Corinthians 9:7 AMP)

What does generosity from the heart look like?

1) Kindness is defined as the quality of being friendly — being generous and considerate.

  • Saying Hello with a smile to stranger
  • Inviting someone to go in front of you in line
  • Holding the door open
  • Sending a note of encouragement
  • Bringing extra snacks to give to the homeless

2) Caring is defined as showing concern for one another.

  • Offering to babysit
  • Picking up groceries for someone
  • Bringing a meal
  • Praying with someone who needs encouragement
  • Driving someone to appointments

3) Financially Blessing others

  • Buy coffee for the person behind you in the drive thru
  • Take a friend to lunch
  • Pay someone’s electric bill
  • Invest in someone’s education
  • Volunteer in the community

God promises us that our generosity will bring us prosperity.

“The generous man [is a source of blessing and]
shall be prosperous and enriched,
And he who waters will himself be watered
[reaping the generosity, he has sown].”
(Proverbs 11:25 AMP)
