Integrity

Today we are talking about a subject which I have encountered many times over these last three weeks, the lack of integrity. The lack of integrity seems to be a growing epidemic in our culture.

My most recent experience with the lack of integrity began about 3 weeks ago when we purchased a new house. After 4 delays in closing and a dismal walk-through, my husband and I were actually stunned by the lack of commitment held by others in a verbal agreement. By both the builder and their real estate company we were given promises that were neither upheld nor acknowledged.

Apparently, I have been living in a bubble in my dealings as I was really unaware that this level of bad character existed. And it appears to come without any remorse or concern.

What describes someone who walks in integrity?

Honesty
Good Character
Morality
Decency
Goodness
Honor

A person of integrity is someone you can trust with your most prized possessions. A person who will honor what they have committed to do for you.

Should we expect people who are not Born-Again believers to walk in integrity? YES! It is a quality that should be at the core of every person. It keeps marriages solid and makes families stronger and enhances every part of your life.

But even more so should we as Born-Again believers need to live a life of integrity. When we do, we are able to set the example for others and reap the benefits.

Let me give you an example of a little challenge I had to walk in integrity. My girlfriend and I were driving to a conference where I was the speaker. We realized my car displays the speed limit and it flashes when I am driving over the speed limit as a warning to slow down. It really is a test of my integrity of whether I heeded the warning or continued to speed.

Driving over the speed limit may not seem like a big deal. But think about the twofold message speeding sends. First and foremost, speeding is breaking the law. In addition, speeding disregards for the safety of others.

What does integrity look like in our lives?

In Colossians 3:12, 14 says, “put on a heart of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience [which has the power to endure whatever injustice or unpleasantness comes, with good temper]… wrap yourselves in [unselfish] love, which is the perfect bond of unity [for everything is bound together in agreement when each one seeks the best for others].” (AMP)

Just as a side note, in our house scenario, I have had to ask God for the power to endure with a good temper. And I have had to really seek God for wisdom and peace, not allowing their lack of integrity to interfere with my joy.

One of the things God has been speaking to me about is what I believe to be a key to integrity. Look at the last sentence in the Scripture. We are encouraged to wrap ourselves in love in pursuit of seeking what is best — God’s best. By asking God, “What is Your best for this situation?” With this, we are opened to His solutions — His best. His best will be the best for everyone involved.

In closing, think about if you are challenged either being in a situation that is lacking integrity or an area in your life where you are not living in integrity.
