Finishing Well

Beginning well is a momentary thing;
Finishing well is a lifelong thing.
~ Ravi Zacharias ~

One of the greatest legacies we can leave is to finish life well. This is actually a principle found in the Bible, “…let us run with endurance and active persistence the race that is set before us.” (Hebrews 12:1, AMP) It is in the normal everyday we can learn to apply this principle.

I use the term Lame Duck when I experience someone who doesn’t endure until the end. Someone who is waiting for their time, in a specific role, to be completed and has eased up in their effectiveness.

For example, they are moving from one job to the next without completing the tasks at hand. This keeps them from finishing well.

Here are three outcomes from this type of behavior.

First, you are not investing well in your future. Second, you are not serving the company well — they are not getting their monies worth in your last days. Finally, you do not leave a good last impression.

“We must meet the challenge rather
than wish it were not before us.”
~ William J. Brennan, Jr. ~

Now, let me tell you about a friend of mine. After many years of having a good job, not her dream job, she had reached the point where she was able to move on. Realizing it was the right time to step into the next phase of her dream she made up her mind that until she walked out the door she was going to do everything with excellence.

Right before she handed in her notice the company asked her to apply for two positions – both were promotions!

The best preparation for tomorrow
is doing your best today.

Key Benefits in Finishing Well

Finishing well not only affects you it creates a model for others.

Here are just 5 of the many benefits.

  • Finishing well brings closure. When you finish well, it allows you to leave knowing that you have given your best. You will not have regrets of things you should have done before you left.
  • Finishing well allows you to acknowledge the people who have invested in you. Expressing gratitude is powerful. People appreciate being acknowledged for the participation.
  • Finishing well ensures lasting relationships. The people you are in relationship with are one of your greatest assets. When you finish well, you are demonstrating to them you will carry your responsibility until the end and you are investing in them.
  • Finishing well builds confidence in you. When you choose to give your best this choice becomes part of your character.
  • Finishing well is an investment in your future. Your persistence in finishing well instills a work ethic, which carries on to your new ventures.

As I am finishing writing I realized finishing well carries an overall theme that can be summed up in one word — integrity. Here are a few of the words describing integrity: honest, good character, principled, ethical, trustworthy, honorable, and fair.

Finishing well is really about you and your character. It is about doing the right thing whether we feel like it or not, even doing the right thing whether they deserve it or not.

In the Bible, there is the story of a young man, 17 years old, whose brothers are jealous of him. They decide instead of killing him, they would sell him as a slave. For the next 23 years, his integrity was tested and strengthened through the test. He was promoted, then wrongly accused of a crime and thrown back into prison. Once again he was promoted only this time he would be reunited with his brothers and save his entire family from a famine. You can read the story of Joseph in Genesis 37-48.

Finishing well, first starts with a decision to do our best. Determine this to be a path for your life, let your character guide your actions and your actions set your standard.
